Your ADHD Heroine's Journey

Writer: Alana Stern Alana Stern

A Path of Transformation

The Hero’s Journey is a timeless story structure found in myths, books, and movies—where an ordinary person is called to an extraordinary adventure. They face challenges, overcome doubts, find allies and mentors, and ultimately transform into a stronger, wiser version of themselves.

This journey isn’t just for mythical heroes—it’s the path of real people navigating real struggles. And for a woman with ADHD, the adventure is about embracing her true self, finding the right tools, and stepping into her full potential.

Keep reading to discover that you've alreasy begun your own journey!

The ordinary world

Once upon a time, you were a little girl who thrived in a world of imagination, adventure, and endless possibilities. But slowly, messages began to appear on the walls of your Palace of Possibilities:

“You need to try harder.”

“You have so much potential—why don’t you just apply yourself?”

“Where’s your willpower?”

You started to believe them and added your own writing to the walls:

“If it takes this much effort, I must not be smart.”

“I may look successful, but I have to hide the chaos around me—and inside me.”

"It's because I'm lazy..."

As you grew, you sensed that the world didn’t accept your true nature. Feeling different, ashamed, and exhausted, you wondered why everything seemed so much harder for you than for others. Yet, amid the struggle, a quiet voice whispered: What if there’s another way?

The Call to Adventure

Maybe it was an ADHD diagnosis, a social media post, or a friend’s suggestion—but something sparked hope. Hope that life didn’t have to be this hard. Hope that you could rewrite the messages on your walls.

Refusing the Call

But change is daunting. It takes effort and you’re already so depleted just trying to stay afloat. What if it doesn’t work? What if you fail—again?

Crossing the Threshold

One day, you meet a guide who hands you a box of magic tools—strategies tailored to your ADHD brain. You take a deep breath, step forward, and commit to the journey.

Trials, Allies, and Enemies, Oh My!

The path isn’t easy. There are ordeals to go through and chasms to cross. You face inner foes and setbacks. Old habits threaten to pull you back, and self-doubt creeps in.

But you also find allies—people who understand your struggles. They reveal that the secret elixir of possibility exists, but it is guarded by a dragon.

Little by little, despite the chronic resistance you fight, you begin to build some new skills and see some benefits to your efforts.

Approaching the Innermost Cave

With your guide’s help, you discover a sword hidden deep within—a newfound strength within yourself.

The Ordeal & The Reward

With courage, you seize the sword, slay the dragon, and claim your elixir. You begin to rewrite your story:

You are not your ADHD—you have ADHD.

You are strong, talented, and whole.

You don’t need to try harder. You just need to try differently.

The Road Back

Armed with new tools and self-acceptance, you wipe away the old messages and replace them with truths. You step into your new, reframed Palace of Posibilities as your authentic self:

  • Dropping the mask of “normal”

  • Accepting your challenges without despair or using ADHD as an excuse

  • Learning from mistakes and trying again

Returning with the Elixir

Living well with ADHD means accepting who you are, supporting yourself in ways that work for you, and focusing your energy on what you love and do best. You—the creative, capable, resourceful, and authentic you—are a gift to the world.

Ressurection: The End—Or a New Beginning?
